Denis Smith’s Ball of Light on The Import

13th May, 2010

We’re done with light graffiti, we really are – what started as an exciting creative vision has been sucked dry by advertising execs across the land – it’s just not anything remotely bordering original anymore….. well, that was our opinion until we saw this lovely little collection of images from Australian photographer Denis Smith. Pushing the boundaries of light graffiti, Smith has produced something mysterious, mythical and alluring… and we love it!

If you like Light Graffiti, check out Michael Bosanko: http://www.michaelbosanko.com/portfolio50325.html

Lots of good work, and much more interesting than basic spheres.

I’d argue that the “basic sphere” is what makes Smith’s work so captivating. It’s ethereal and still organic. It doesn’t feel over-processed to me. It fits into, and augments, its settings with out overwhelming. I think it’s beautiful.

I agree with Jolie. There are heaps of light painters out there but what makes Smith’s work so unique is the settings – take the ball of light out of the frame and you still have an intriguing photo. I haven’t seen other light painters create such perfect spheres in a range of bright and low light conditions. I like the fact that this isn’t overdone with a million different light painting techniques!

agree with jolie and kyrie. the simicity of the sphere and the actual scene makes it all the more cpativating. The scene doesn’t get lost in a world of lighting colour
